2001 Grand marshal of the Dublin Country Fair Jean and Bob have been members of the community for over 70 years. Jean was born and raised in Dublin. Bob was born and raised in Scarboro. They attended Dublin High School and graduated in 1945. As high school sweethearts they were married in 1947 and raised seven children; 5 boys and 2 girls (which was a task in itself!) for which now has given them 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren to spoil. Jean has been a member of Dublin United Methodist Church for 63 years. She has served as Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. She has organized and directed Vacation Bible School. Jean has been involved in numerous fund-raisers for the church. She is presently the church historian and unofficially the Dublin community historian. Jean has been involved in Dublin School PTA, Cub Scouts, Dublin Square Dancers, and the Dublin/Darlington Parks & Recreation. She has enjoyed traveling and camping across the country for many years, especially with some of the Dublin Square Dancers. Bob in the 54 years he has been a member of the Dublin United Methodist church, has served on various committees. He was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He is a charter member of the Dublin Parks and Recreation council and has for 20 years served as their treasurer. He is currently a member of the Dublin Country Fair as their treasurer and is on the scholarship committee. Bob is active in the Dublin School Alumni and was on of the many responsible for the Bell Marquee being erected by the Alumni Association. Bob worked for Hinder Motors for 40 years or more at the Bel Air and Aberdeen locations. He now has his own truck and car lot in Dublin. Over the years some of the activities that he has enjoyed are flying, riding horses, for which he said that he always "felt closer to God when riding or flying". His favorite past time is plowing snow and working with his grandson at the car lot. It's with pride and honor we acknowledge the effort and contributions Bob & Jean Day have given to the community. Congratulations Bob & Jean!
2002
Maryland Recreation and Parks Association AWARD COMMUNITY
VOLUNTEER AWARD “Two
Days In Dublin”
September 11th
changed us all in 2001. It added another date to remember for a generation
already haunted by the question, “Where were you when President Kennedy was
shot?”
I believe we all need a return to a simpler time and kinder, gentler
nation. It is for these reasons that I am nominating Jean and Bob Day for the
community Volunteer Award
In 1965 public recreation was a major issue in Harford County. Citizens
wanted to know where the youth of the community could play, who would supervise
their activities and how would these programs be funded? Challenged with the
task of creating programs that were safe, affordable and fun, local areas began
forming recreation councils to respond to the leisure concerns of a growing
populace. It is here that our story, “Two Days In Dublin” begins.
Jean and Bob met in grade school in the Dublin community, married there
and chose to raise their family there. They still reside in Dublin and are
actively involved in numerous community events and affairs. The beauty of all
this is that they have been doing so, in tandem, for 54 years.
Bob signed on in 1965 with the Dublin Recreation Council. The council has
had many members come and go as needs and interests changed, but there has not
been a year without a Day, or two, serving in some capacity on the council. In
2001, Bob received a proclamation from Harford County Government and recognition
from the Department of Parks and Recreation for 35 years plus of dedicated
service. Jean was given recognition for over 25 years of community activism. Jean
has chaired women’s fitness, baton & majorettes and a walking program. Both have chaired a square
dance program and been avid supporters of the square dance club’s annual Heart
Fund Dance fundraiser. On February 10th, 2002 Jean and Bob will be
working again, as they have for over 25 years, to help those who may be unable
to help themselves. They are so dedicated to the cause that Bob will drive 20
miles to plow the parking lots of the facility or do whatever else is necessary
to ensure that the dance can and will go on.
A few years ago, Bob and Jean lost their son to a heart attack. Bob has
had multiple surgeries, a stroke and now is preparing to take on some additional
household duties since Jean is about to have knee surgery. So what is their
biggest concern? Do I have the right contact names and numbers for the club
president, do I have any news to share about progress of the new restroom
building, any update on the trail?
Beyond their recreation council work, they were instrumental in the
historic preservation of their grade school bell, church trustees, on a
scholarship committee, volunteered with the local Boys and Girl Scout chapters,
served on various community association boards and PTA boards. They’ve done a
little bit of everything and continue to do a little more, here and there.
The two of them monitor the Dublin Recreation Complex after closing and
make minor repairs at the storage building and pavilion. They have even aided by
providing access to the park restrooms when professional staff was unavailable.
They’ve mowed, weeded, painted and planted. They’ve been good friends and
neighbors.
I began this by making you aware of two memorable dates. I will close
now. I have given you two memorable Days… Ms.
Karen Green Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation
